Gitanjali Rao is a 15-year-old scientist and inventor who has been named as the Time magazine’s first “kid of the year”. She was chosen from a field of 5000 US-based nominees. She was born in Denver, Colorado. In 2017, she invented a device that detects the concentration of lead in water. The device transfers information via Bluetooth. She was invited to TEDx several times to talk about her invention. Also, this year Gitanjali created an application “kindly” that detects messages that have bully content and warns the users about it. Besides that, the young scientist is fighting for equal pay for women and men at work.
As she said in the interview with Angelina Jolie: “I don’t look like your typical scientist. Everything I see on TV is that it's an older, usually white man as a scientist. My goal has really shifted from not only creating my own devices to solve the world’s problems but to inspire others to do the same as well. Because, from personal experience, it’s not easy when you don’t see anyone else like you.”
